Who runs mail.com

According to its about page, mail.com was founded in 1995 as Vanity Mail Services and bought by the German United Internet group in 2010. United Internet AG owns it today; the service is run by 1&1 Mail & Media Inc. in Philadelphia, the company named in the site’s footer. The mail.com name itself was first registered on March 24, 1997.

Mail for the domain goes to mx00.mail.com and mx01.mail.com, the provider’s own servers.

Can you still create a mail.com address?

Yes. The mail.com home page offers free email and lets new users “choose from 100+ email domains”. @mail.com is one of them. Among the others the site names are @email.com, @usa.com, @dr.com and @myself.com. That explains addresses you may not recognize: jane@usa.com or jane@dr.com is a mail.com account, not a fake company address. The email.com profile looks at one of them in detail.

Is mail.com a valid email domain for your list?

Yes, treat it like any other webmail address:

To check whether a given mail.com address has a mailbox behind it, use is this a real email address. The guide on how to check if an email exists explains what that check can and can’t tell you. For mail-app setup, see the mail.com IMAP and SMTP settings.

Check an address at mail.com

A real domain doesn’t mean the mailbox exists. The email checker looks up the domain’s MX records and asks the mail server about the mailbox without sending an email, and it flags disposable, role and free-provider addresses.
