Frequently asked questions

What is an MX record?

A Mail Exchange record is a DNS entry that names the servers accepting email for a domain. Without one, a domain normally cannot receive email.

What does the MX priority mean?

Senders try the server with the lowest number first and fall back to higher numbers if it does not answer. Servers with the same number share the load.

How long do MX changes take?

Until the old record’s TTL (time to live) expires at resolvers, usually minutes to a few hours. The TTL is shown in the result.

What is a null MX?

A single MX record with priority 0 and the host ‘.’ (RFC 7505). It says that the domain does not accept email at all, so senders fail immediately instead of retrying.
