Frequently asked questions
What is DMARC?
Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance is a TXT record at _dmarc.yourdomain.com. It tells receivers what to do with email that fails SPF and DKIM alignment, and where to send reports.
Do I need DMARC?
Yes, if you send email. Since 2024, Gmail and Yahoo require a DMARC record for anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to their users, and it is the only way to stop others from using your domain in the From address.
What DMARC policy should I use?
Start with p=none and a rua address to collect reports. Once all your legitimate senders pass, move to p=quarantine, then p=reject.
What is DMARC alignment?
The domain in the visible From address must match the domain checked by SPF (the envelope sender) or by DKIM (the d= tag). Relaxed alignment accepts subdomains, strict needs an exact match.
