Zoho IMAP settings and SMTP server
The Zoho IMAP settings depend on your account: personal and free accounts use imap.zoho.com, paid organization accounts on their own domain use imappro.zoho.com, both on port 993 with SSL. Turn on IMAP access in Zoho Mail first, and use an application-specific password if two-factor authentication is on.

Zoho Mail SMTP settings, account types and data centers
Zoho documents these values in its help pages on IMAP access, POP access and SMTP configuration.
- Account type decides the host. Personal accounts (
@zohomail.com,@zoho.com) and free organization accounts useimap.zoho.com,pop.zoho.comandsmtp.zoho.com. Paid organization accounts on their own domain use theprohosts:imappro.zoho.com,poppro.zoho.comandsmtppro.zoho.com. - Data center decides the domain. The table shows Zoho’s US data center. Your account’s exact hosts are under Server Configuration Details in Zoho Mail; a client with wrong details stops working. Some mail apps’ autoconfiguration data suggests regional hosts such as
imap.zoho.com.au. - Zoho Mail SMTP settings. Port 465 with SSL or port 587 with TLS (STARTTLS), authentication required. Port 25 isn’t an option. The From address must be your account’s address or one of its aliases.
- Free plan. Zoho says newly signed-up free users don’t get IMAP or POP access, and that the free plan is available only in selected data centers.
Zoho allows 100 IMAP and 5 POP connections per account (Zoho Mail limits and policies).
Enable IMAP and create an app-specific password
Turn on IMAP access (Zoho Mail on the web):
- Go to Settings → Mail Accounts and click your primary email address.
- In the IMAP section, check IMAP Access.
- Optionally set Auto-Expunge, Include Archived emails and the folder options.
- Click Save.
In an organization, email policies set by the admin can block IMAP; ask your administrator if the option is missing.
Create an application-specific password when two-factor authentication is on. Zoho requires it for POP, IMAP and ActiveSync access (Zoho Help):
- Sign in to Zoho Accounts (
accounts.zoho.com). - In the left menu, go to Security and click App passwords.
- Click Generate New Password, enter a name for the app and click Generate.
- Copy the password into your mail app. Each one works for one application.
If you sign in to Zoho with a Google or other external account (federated sign-in), generate a Zoho password first: external accounts can’t log in over POP, IMAP or ActiveSync. Users who sign in through SAML need an application-specific password too.
Zoho IMAP settings for iPhone, Outlook and Thunderbird
iPhone and iPad (Zoho’s iPhone guide):
- Enable IMAP in Zoho Mail (above).
- On the device: Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Add Account, enter your address, then Add Other Account → Mail Account.
- Enter name, email address, password (an application-specific password if 2FA is on) and a description; tap Next.
- Select IMAP at the top. Incoming Mail Server: host
imap.zoho.com(paid organization:imappro.zoho.com), your full address as user name. Outgoing Mail Server: hostsmtp.zoho.com(orsmtppro.zoho.com), same login. - Tap Next; the device checks the login and saves the account. Map Drafts, Sent and Trash under the account’s Advanced → Mailbox behaviors.
Outlook: add the account manually as IMAP with the hosts for your account type, port 993 SSL/TLS for incoming and 465 SSL/TLS (or 587 with TLS) for outgoing mail, outgoing authentication on.
Thunderbird (Zoho’s Thunderbird guide): enter name, address and password; if Thunderbird can’t detect the servers, click Configure Manually and enter the hosts for your account type with Normal Password as the authentication method. Click Done, not Test: Zoho says testing may reset your entries. Compare the hosts with your account’s Server Configuration Details, since automatic values may point to another data center.
Common Zoho Mail errors
| Error or symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Unable to log in / authentication failure | Use your full email address. With two-factor authentication, use an application-specific password; with Google or other federated sign-in, generate a Zoho password first. |
| IMAP access not enabled | Turn on IMAP Access under Settings → Mail Accounts. Organization users: the admin’s email policy may block IMAP. New free accounts don’t get IMAP. |
| “Relaying Disallowed” | The From address doesn’t match the account you logged in with. Send from the account’s address or one of its aliases, and check it for typos. |
| “Unable to send message. Cannot connect to smtp | Open the account’s SMTP settings, turn on Use SSL and set the port to 465. |
| Can’t connect to the outgoing server | Don’t use port 25. Use 465 with SSL or 587 with TLS; if the ports are right, Zoho support asks for a traceroute to smtp.zoho.com. |
| Every sent message appears twice | Turn off Save copy of sent emails under Mail Accounts → SMTP in Zoho Mail; your mail app already saves a copy. |
The error texts come from Zoho’s help pages on SMTP configuration and iPhone setup. For bounces from receiving servers, see the SMTP error codes.
Zoho Mail sending limits
Zoho measures sending limits in a rolling one-hour window (Zoho Mail limits and policies):
| Limit | Free accounts | Paid accounts |
|---|---|---|
| External emails per hour | 50–500, depending on reputation | 50–500, depending on reputation |
| Internal emails per hour | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| External recipients per message (To, Cc, Bcc) | 100 | 150 |
| Internal recipients per message | 500 | 500 |
Zoho doesn’t support bulk sending; the quota includes aliases, delegates and out-of-office replies. Over the limit you can’t send for up to an hour. The external limit depends on your reputation and contact quality, so clean lists with a bulk email verifier first.
Which domains use Zoho Mail?
Zoho’s own consumer addresses end in zohomail.com or zoho.com; mail apps also know regional domains such as zohomail.eu, zohomail.in, zoho.com.au and zohocloud.ca (full list below). Business accounts on a company’s own domain (jane@example.com) can’t be recognized from the address. The MX record tells you: check the domain with the MX lookup.
To find out whether a particular address on a Zoho-hosted domain exists, use is this a real email address.
