Email server settings
Yahoo Mail IMAP settings and SMTP server
The Yahoo Mail IMAP settings are imap.mail.yahoo.com, port 993, SSL required, with your full Yahoo address as the user name. Outgoing mail uses smtp.mail.yahoo.com on port 465 or 587. Mail apps that don’t use Yahoo’s own sign-in page need an app password instead of your Yahoo password.

Yahoo SMTP and IMAP settings explained
Yahoo publishes the values in its help articles on IMAP settings and POP settings:
- Yahoo IMAP settings:
imap.mail.yahoo.com, port 993, SSL required. IMAP syncs both ways: what you do in the app happens in your Yahoo mailbox too. - Yahoo SMTP settings:
smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS), authentication required with the same login as for incoming mail. - POP3:
pop.mail.yahoo.com, port 995, SSL. POP copies messages from the Inbox only, and changes in the app don’t affect the mail on the server. - The same servers for every Yahoo address, including
ymail.com,rocketmail.comand the country domains such asyahoo.co.uk.
If an app can’t connect at all, Yahoo points at firewalls, antivirus software or network settings that block ports 993, 995, 465 or 587.
Create a Yahoo app password
An app password is a randomly generated code that lets a non-Yahoo mail app into your account. You need one for apps that don’t use Yahoo’s own sign-in page, and Yahoo asks for one when you use two-step verification or Account Key (Yahoo Help, third-party apps):
- Sign in to the Yahoo Account Security page.
- Under External connections, click Create app password.
- Enter a name for the app and click Generate password.
- Enter the password in your mail app’s password field, then click Done.
You enter it once, when you set up the app. Yahoo may refuse to create an app password in an unfamiliar browser: use one you have signed in with on several consecutive days, not an Incognito window. Customer care can’t override this check.
App passwords don’t expire when you change your Yahoo password. To cut off an app, delete its app password under External connections. Older apps with outdated security also need you to grant them access in Yahoo Mail’s account settings.
Yahoo IMAP settings for Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird and phones
- Outlook: add the account; if Outlook asks for the account type, choose IMAP and enter
imap.mail.yahoo.com(993, SSL/TLS) andsmtp.mail.yahoo.com(465, SSL/TLS, or 587, STARTTLS). Use the app password as the password. - iPhone and iPad: Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Add Account → Yahoo, then sign in. Apple lists Yahoo among the providers it sets up automatically.
- Thunderbird: enter your address; Thunderbird fills in the Yahoo servers. Check them against the table and use an app password if Thunderbird doesn’t open Yahoo’s sign-in page.
- Android: Yahoo recommends its own Yahoo Mail app when a third-party app causes trouble; otherwise add the account in your mail app with the values above.
- Fewer devices: Yahoo suggests keeping only current, active devices connected over IMAP.
Common Yahoo Mail errors in mail apps
| Error or symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| “Authentication failed” or “Server password has changed” | The app’s security protocols may be outdated. Update the app, or grant it access in your Yahoo account settings; use an app password. |
| Password rejected although it’s correct | You use two-step verification or Account Key. Create an app password and enter it instead of your Yahoo password. |
553 error when sending | Yahoo names an unverified extra email address in the account as a cause. Verify or remove it in your Yahoo settings. |
| The app can’t connect to the server | Check the host names and ports, then your firewall or antivirus: ports 993, 995, 465 and 587 must be open. Removing and re-adding the account clears corrupted saved settings. |
| Yahoo stops you from sending for a while | You reached a sending limit. Yahoo’s notification says how long to wait. |
Yahoo’s own troubleshooting steps: Fix POP or IMAP client sending and receiving issues. Bounces from receiving servers are explained in the SMTP error codes reference.
Yahoo Mail sending limits
Yahoo doesn’t publish numbers: “Yahoo does not disclose the number of recipients or emails that can be sent at one time” (Yahoo Help). When you hit a limit, Yahoo shows a notice, usually with how long to wait, and recommends a bulk email service for regular mass mailings.
If you send to Yahoo users at volume, Yahoo’s rules as a receiver matter more: authentication, one-click unsubscribe and a spam rate below 0.3%, summarized in the Gmail and Yahoo sender requirements.
Is @yahoo.com a valid email domain?
Yes. yahoo.com is Yahoo’s main email domain. Yahoo Mail addresses also end in country domains such as yahoo.co.uk, yahoo.de or yahoo.com.au, and in ymail.com, rocketmail.com and myyahoo.com; mail apps set them up with the servers above (list below).
Like every free mailbox, a Yahoo address can be abandoned or deleted, and mail to it then hard-bounces. Check one address with our free check Is this a real email address? or a whole list with the bulk email verifier before you send.
