Namecheap Private Email SMTP settings and IMAP

The Namecheap Private Email SMTP settings are mail.privateemail.com, port 465 with SSL or port 587 with STARTTLS, with outgoing authentication switched on. IMAP and POP3 use the same host: 993 for IMAP, 995 for POP3. The user name is your full email address, the password your master password or an app password.

privateemail.com SMTP and IMAP settings explained

Namecheap’s configuration article for mail clients is the source:

  • One host for everything. mail.privateemail.com is the incoming and the outgoing server, and Namecheap says it “should not be changed”: don’t replace it with mail. plus your own domain.
  • Encryption only. “Only encrypted connections are supported by our mail servers.” IMAP runs on 993 (SSL) or 143 (STARTTLS), POP3 on 995 (SSL), SMTP on 465 (SSL) or 587 (STARTTLS).
  • Outgoing authentication on, SPA off. Turn on authentication for the outgoing server with the same login; Secure Password Authentication (SPA) must be disabled.
  • Calendar and contacts sync over CalDAV and CardDAV at dav.privateemail.com (Namecheap).

Receiving also depends on your DNS: the domain’s MX records must point to Namecheap (see below), and sending needs SPF and DKIM records in place.

Create a Private Email app password

Namecheap accepts the master password or an application password in mail apps. App passwords also work for CalDAV and CardDAV, and you can revoke one app without touching the others (Namecheap):

  1. Sign in to webmail at privateemail.com.
  2. Open Settings and click Launch Security Center.
  3. Open the App passwords tab and click Create new password.
  4. Name it, click Proceed, and confirm with your regular password.
  5. Copy the password: it is shown only once. Confirm that you saved it and click Done.
  • Changing the master password doesn’t affect app passwords already in use; the new master password then works only for webmail, and an app password can’t sign in to webmail.
  • Deleting an app password disconnects every app that uses it. Delete all of them and your mail clients lose access until you create a new one in webmail.

Namecheap IMAP settings for Outlook, Apple Mail and phones

  • Outlook: add the account manually as IMAP. Incoming mail.privateemail.com, 993, SSL/TLS; outgoing mail.privateemail.com, 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS). Turn on authentication for the outgoing server with the same login, and leave Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) off.
  • Apple Mail (Mac, iPhone, iPad): add an Other Mail Account, choose IMAP and enter mail.privateemail.com as the incoming and the outgoing server, with your full address as the user name.
  • Thunderbird and Android: enter the same host and ports from the table; user name is the full address on both servers.

Common Private Email problems

Error or symptomFix
Mail app can’t log inCheck that the app uses an app password, not your webmail password: once the two differ, the master password works only in webmail. If you’re unsure, create a new app password.
No new mail arrivesCheck that the domain’s MX records are mx1.privateemail.com and mx2.privateemail.com, both with priority 10, and fully propagated.
Sending fails or messages bounceCheck the SPF and DKIM records. If they are correct and sending still fails, Namecheap asks for the full headers of the bounce.
Your messages land in recipients’ spam foldersNamecheap names SPF, DKIM and DMARC, sending reputation, content and engagement; new domains may need a warm-up period.
Sending stops for a whileYou reached the hourly limit (below). Wait, and keep each message under 50 recipients.

From Namecheap’s Why can’t I send or receive emails? and its app password article. DNS changes take time there: up to 30 minutes for records, up to 48 hours for nameservers, up to 4 hours for domain verification of a new Private Email subscription. The SPF record generator and DMARC generator build the records, and the SMTP error codes reference explains bounce codes.

Private Email sending limits

Which domains use Namecheap Private Email?

Any domain can use it: Private Email mailboxes carry your own domain (jane@example.org), and privateemail.com only appears in the server names. A domain on Private Email has its MX records at mx1.privateemail.com and mx2.privateemail.com, which the MX lookup shows. Whether a particular mailbox exists is a separate question: check it with is this a real email address.
