How to set up GMX (gmx.net) in a mail app

  1. Choose add account → manual setup (or "other account") in your mail app.
  2. Enter your full GMX (gmx.net) email address and password.
  3. Pick IMAP for incoming mail and enter the server, port and security from the table above.
  4. Enter the SMTP server for outgoing mail (mail.gmx.net, port 465) and enable authentication with the same login.

If the login keeps failing, enable IMAP/POP access in the GMX (gmx.net) web settings and use an app password if your account uses two-step verification.

GMX (gmx.net) email settings: FAQ

What is the GMX (gmx.net) SMTP server?

The outgoing (SMTP) server of GMX (gmx.net) is mail.gmx.net, port 465 with SSL/TLS. Log in with your full email address.

What are the GMX (gmx.net) IMAP settings?

Incoming mail (IMAP): server imap.gmx.net, port 993, security SSL/TLS, user name: your full email address.

Should I use IMAP or POP3?

Use IMAP if you read your email on more than one device: messages and folders stay in sync on the server. POP3 downloads messages to one device and is only useful for offline archives on a single computer.

Why does my GMX (gmx.net) login fail in a mail app?

Most providers block plain password logins from mail apps when two-step verification is on. Create an app-specific password in your account's security settings, or use an app that supports OAuth sign-in. Also check that IMAP or POP access is enabled in the webmail settings.
