Is @me.com a real email domain?

Is @me.com a real email? Yes. me.com is one of Apple’s three iCloud Mail domains. Since September 19, 2012, new iCloud accounts get @icloud.com, so a me.com address belongs to an Apple user with an older account.

Short answer

Yes. me.com is Apple’s iCloud Mail domain from the MobileMe days, and its MX records point to the same iCloud mail servers as icloud.com. Apple says accounts created before September 19, 2012 have both an @me.com and an @icloud.com address. Newer accounts only get @icloud.com, so nobody can sign up for a new me.com address.

Who runs me.com

Apple. me.com is one of the three endings of iCloud Mail, next to icloud.com and the even older mac.com. Apple’s support article About your @icloud.com, @me.com, and @mac.com email addresses ties the domain to MobileMe and early iCloud accounts:

The me.com MX records point to mx01.mail.icloud.com and mx02.mail.icloud.com, the same hosts as icloud.com. The domain name is much older than the service: the registry’s RDAP record dates its first registration to August 23, 1994.

Can you still create a me.com address?

No. Apple: “If you created an iCloud account on or after September 19, 2012, your email address ends with @icloud.com.” Apple also warns that a deleted @me.com or @mac.com alias can’t be added back to the account.

So a me.com address in your sign-up form is not suspicious. It means the person has had an Apple account since 2012 or earlier.

Is @me.com a real email for your list?

Yes. Treat it like an icloud.com address:

Before mailing a list with many old Apple addresses, a bulk email verifier finds the mailboxes that no longer exist; each one would otherwise come back as a hard bounce. Mail-app users need the iCloud Mail IMAP settings and an app-specific password.

Check an address at me.com

A real domain doesn’t mean the mailbox exists. The email checker looks up the domain’s MX records and asks the mail server about the mailbox without sending an email, and it flags disposable, role and free-provider addresses.

Frequently asked questions

Is @me.com a real email address?

Yes. me.com is an Apple iCloud Mail domain, and mail to it goes to Apple’s iCloud mail servers. Whether a specific me.com mailbox exists is something only a check of the full address can tell.

Is me.com the same as icloud.com?

Same service. Apple gives accounts created before September 19, 2012 both an @me.com and an @icloud.com address, and both domains use the same iCloud mail servers. Accounts created later only have @icloud.com, so don’t swap the ending yourself.

Can I still get a me.com email address?

No. Apple says iCloud accounts created on or after September 19, 2012 get an address ending in @icloud.com. Only older accounts have @me.com.

What about mac.com addresses?

They are older still. Apple’s help says users who had a working @mac.com address on July 9, 2008, kept MobileMe active and moved to iCloud before August 1, 2012 can use @icloud.com, @me.com and @mac.com.
