Who runs email.com
The free webmail service mail.com. The mail.com home page lists @email.com among the domains new users can pick, next to @usa.com and @myself.com. mail.com’s about page says the company was founded in 1995 as Vanity Mail Services and has belonged to United Internet AG since 2010; the service is run by 1&1 Mail & Media Inc.
DNS confirms it: email.com has the same two MX hosts as mail.com, mx00.mail.com and mx01.mail.com. The domain name was first registered on September 17, 1997, according to the registry’s RDAP record.
Can you still create an email.com address?
Yes. mail.com says it offers “over 100 email domains free of charge”, and its home page names @email.com as one of them. An email.com account is a full mail.com account; only the ending differs. Mail apps use the mail.com IMAP and SMTP settings.
Is email.com a valid email address for your list?
The domain, yes. Two things to keep in mind:
- It counts as a free provider.
email.comis on our free email domains list, likemail.com. It’s not on our disposable list. - It’s not a placeholder. If your test fixtures or sample data use a made-up address like
test@email.com, mail to it goes to a real provider and possibly a real person. The names reserved for documentation areexample.com,example.netandexample.org(RFC 2606); note thatexample.compublishes a null MX, so it never accepts mail at all.
That also means a sign-up with a short, generic-looking email.com address isn’t fake by definition, and isn’t real by definition either. Check the address itself with is this a real email address, or a whole file with the bulk email verifier. The email address format guide covers the syntax rules behind a valid address.
